I saw The Fog of War today at the Highland Park Cinema. I am very
impressed. It is probably the best documentary I have ever seen.
Some of the archival footage and taped white house conversations were
mind boggling. Mr. Morris used quite a bit of the Model 32 Teletype
messaging and lots of the IBM card sorter that we provided. The
music was great. The special effects were well done as well.
Regardless of your personal opinion of Robert Strange McNamara
(Strange is his middle name) the insight into his life and experience
was and is absolutely fascinating. He was fired by LBJ after he was
presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Mostly because
McNamara wanted to pull out of Vietnam. Less than half of the deaths
had occurred when he left the position of Secretary of Defense.
When he was with Ford Motor Company he was responsible for the Falcon
and redesigning the cars for safety. He had the first seat belts
installed in 1956. He only served as CEO of Ford for 5 weeks before
he was asked to join the Kennedy Administration. One of his most
interesting comments, at least for me, was that if Kennedy had not
been shot and remained President, he feels that the Vietnam War would
have been over many years sooner.
I highly recommend that you see this film.
Most sincerely,
Don
