Merry Christmas to all who have been so helpful.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to be helpful!
1. Can you put a TD, keyboard and printer in series with the TU and
transmit,
or does the keyboard have to be separate from the TD and printer to
transmit?
If you want to use the TD, must it transmit separately? I am searching for
a setup plan to use all this new hardware, the 14 and the 19 set. Let me
put
it another way. Does each component, TD, keyboard and printer have to be
hooked to the loop and the TU exclusively? I think I need a "plug and play"
diagram.
2. Can I transmit and print my transmission at the same time? I know this
sounds like the same question.
3. Here is a new one. When a glass screen communicates with a mechanical,
why do the mechanicals like it if the glass screens turn off their deedle?
I saw your question and smiled. The deedle question came up before the
glass screens came to be. The theory is something like this: It is better to
have the teleprinter main shaft running at speed than to have everything at
full stop, patiently waiting for the "go" signal from the start pulse. The
deedle also helps the distant operator tune your signal if either party is
drifting, frequency wise. And, finally some of us are slow typists and the deedle
keeps things alive at both ends. How's that?
4. Why use crystals? Don't new radios stay on frequency? My old Heathkit
seems to do OK when it warms up. When I use MMTTY as a learning tool, I
notice
that it changes frequency to follow the signal as it changes. Does this not
upset the little rock crystal? Just wondering.
I happen use crystals because that's what my transmitter is equipped to use.
And, it's easier to frequency shift this transmitter's crystals than to
modify the PTO that I could also use. Many folks have successfully used the
mainline frequency shift keyer that Irv Hoff developed for use with both crystals
and PTO's, VFO's, etc. On the other hand, crystals are nice for Autostart
net frequencies as you always know that you are a few Hz from where you want to
be transmitting. Finally, the crystal is being shifted 170 Hz, not enough to
matter. Crystals can be 'pulled' much further than that without problems,
especially if the crystal output is being multiplied within the transmitter.
For example, some transmitters are set up for the crystal to be frequency "x"
and then internally multiply that frequency 'x' to be "2x' or '4x' output
frequency.
