For the last month with the help of the group, I have been working on
and studying on and cleaning on the 19 set. But in the back of my mind, I
kept asking myself why does this machine have two bells. Before the carriage
returns the bell rings, but which bell rings? Today, on break, I was reading in
my TM11-680 and The New Rtty Handbook about the courtesy of ringing the bell
three times before transmission. Well, the light went on. When I got home, I
looked at the green keys, and there it was: It has a BELL! It has a BELL!
Well, the first thing that came to my mind was the Christmas movie, It is a
Wonderful Life. This must be the bell the guardian angel was talking about. A
quick figures shift, the ring of the bell and back to typing. An angel gets its
wings!
Before I really get dingy, here is what I have so far. I have books
which are filling in many bare spots. I understand the basics of TUs and their
problems. I am using the computer program MMTTY to study the nature and
sound of the proper signal and the nature and sound of all the things that attempt
and succeed in covering up or distorting the signal. I have found and
secured my loop through the printer, transmitter and the TD and back. I have
learned how to operate the receiving end of the ST-5A. I have used the MMTTY
program to send a solid signal to the 19 set with flawless success. I am sending the
signal from MMTTY through the ST-5A which I think does the job twice. Well,
it works. I have made a test tape and sent it through the TD and it printed
back out on the printer without missing a letter. And finally, tonight, I got
off work early enough to turn on my Heathkit SB 101, load up MMTTY, turn on the
ST-5A and warm up the main bearings on the 19 set and finally tune in W1AW
for the report. And I'll be darned if it didn't copy my first bulletin "45.45
BAUD BAUDOT." And the BELL rang. Thanks to the group, we have a new RTTY man
and another old Teletype has once again gained its wings.
Thanks all
