That was a good trick if you could use a ST-5 in the 60's as it was not
published by Hoff tuil 1970.   Maybe you were using the st-3 or 4.  Anyway
if done with the 850 shift instead of the 170 shift it should have worked
fine.
I was using a st-6 and the consumer grade recorders would usually give me
about 90 percent or beter copy using 170 hz shift.  Good enough for general
storage but not pix perfect.
