[GreenKeys] Old Bell System TTY Guys?

In my youth one of my telephone company friends used to go to a customer
site sometimes to work on the Teletype.  I never saw the site or the
equipment, but some of the things he carred were a couple of vacuum 
tubes, 35L6 and 50Y6.  I've always wondered what the equipment was
and what those tubes had to do with it.  Anybody know?
