The Hal ST-6 turns on with strictly a carrier on the mark channel. 
Turns on the printer as well.  20-30 seconds after loss of mark tone
it'll shut down the motor on the printer unless you have the Auto-Auto
Off in the auto off position.
No other characters require for the turn on function.  Don't know about
other Hal etc units but i suspect they pretty well operate in the same
matter.  

Haven't read the manual on the Dovetron thru and thru yet but in
watching the lights and listening to the carrier on the receiver, it
appears to key up as soon as it sees channel tones.

What kind of TU requires characters to be sent before turning on?  Guess
my knowledge base here is very limited.
