The printer typewheel (more appropriately cylinder) is all metal with 
a plastic interior.  It rotates and moves up and down but it does 
nothing else unless  it is struck with the print hammer that is 
spring loaded and has a rubber head to protect the characters on the 
type wheel.

You see we are writing about three differerent and separate parts.

 From the platen out to the carriage:

1. Platen
2. Paper
3. Ribbon
4. Typewheel
5. Rubber print hammer head
6.  Print hammer (spring loaded)
