Hi,

If you want to go the counter route rather than do it with a sound card here
are a couple of ideas:

    HP 5334
    HP 5335
    HP 53131
    HP 53180

The first two show up in the $60 to $120 range depending on condition,
options, and location.

The second two are about 4X higher in price.

Why?

Well they all are what is known as a computing counter.

A normal counter running at one reading per second will tell you that you
have a tone between 2000 Hz and 2001 Hz. That's a pretty slow rate and not a
lot of accuracy. A piece of sound card software will do every bit as well.

A computing counter does some magic inside and gives you a fixed number of
digits, regardless of the input frequency. Of course the slower the reading
rate the more digits you get.

The earlier computing counters would give you 8 or 9 digits at a one reading
per second rate. The newer stuff will give you 10 or 12 digits at the same
rate.

You can set a computing counter to a 10 readings per second rate (nice and
fast) and still be getting seven digits of accuracy. Your tone will read out
as 2000.0015 Hz or something like that.

Of course you may not *need* to know that you are .0015 Hz off on the tone
....
