Well,
I'm only an observer because my involvement was only at the ham radio
level. When I was a teenager I earned a living repairing Teletypes for the
hams - I was active on 3620 net with Keith Petersen et al and in fact
through Keith and his contacts at the Bell System in Michigan enough pieces
and parts to build a complete 28ASR - including a (surplus) brand new
cabinet.
I learned a lot about serial data communications and certainly alot about
mechanical systems dissasembling various teletype machines completely down
to the components and rebuilding them. This was how I met Jack WA2HWJ
(apparently before he went to work for Bell System). It is amazing how much
of modern data communications was derived from these systems.

Keep 'em coming.

Me too. We should all sit down at our word processors and write
up our experiences like these and put them together in one place. The
archives of the reflector has those that have been on here but they would
need lots of editing. You can't work in a line of work for 30-40 years
and NOT have a bunch of funny/crazy/odd/typical stories to tell. They
take me back to my salad years.
