I agree with Roy...the Quick Brown Fox/RY test would be useful,
even for testing on-air. A button-selected QBF message would be
the most universal method, versus using a keyboard commend, etc.
The "commercial" Dovetrons allow the operator to preload
a message and then loop it...I use that feature sometimes to
generate a FOX message or a string of RY's. I wouldn't think
it would be too complicated to make that a feature/option.

On the SELCAL...to make things simple, why not just use ZCZC
for the motor turn on and NNNN for turn off? And, that would have
to be selectable so the motor can be turned on without the codes.
Or, use the code selection to put the converter (Dovetron, for
example) in the "receive" mode from the "standby" mode.

Those Greenkeyers with Model 28's could go further by coding
their call letters, or whatever, into their stuntboxes. But, since it
seems a long shot that enough of use could get back on a clear
channel these days, I think the ZCZC/NNNN would be
sufficient. There's also some "Selective Calling" boxes floating
around. I have an old Frederick unit that is programmed with
my call letters for turn-on, and NNNN for turn off. I modified
it to operate a relay; previously, it would "blind/unblind" the
machine on the loop. This is an electronic version of one
way to program the 28 stuntbox. In that scenario, the
printer is always "listening" to the circuit, but it blocks
the typing mechanism from printing anything. There used to be
special 28 typing units that were entirely stripped of the
frontplate typebox position parts and it was only used as
a naked stuntbox. That unit would then control RT sets
for selective message routing...neat. To watch one of them run
and control several RT cabinets is a TTY's man's dream.
The noise is delightful!!!!
