GM All,
Well, I guess that this former RM should weigh in with his .02.  In the 
Navy, at least, the term (which I still use) was RATT (yup, called 
"Rat") for Radio TeleType.  I still occasionally slip and use the term, 
and believe it or not, some are not familiar with it.  I can figure that 
RTTY kind of evolved as a phonetic equivalent the same way, as RITTY 
--hi--..
