Just to give an idea of what "high speed" might mean, the Tektronix 109
pulse generator uses a mercury wetted relay to give a pulse with 250ps (IOW
a quarter nanosecond) rise time. In the 519 oscillopscope, a reed is used
to produce a calibration pulse with 100ps rise time. To put this in
perspective: in 100ps light travels around one inch.
