Tim et al,

One of the "features" of a Teletype is that it will function
without the motor running...you just turn it by hand and
watch things happen. If you have a TTY on a loop
(printer and keyboard) you can type a character in the 
keyboard and watch it go through the printer, selecting
the bits, setting up the codes bars, etc. Of course,
the lack of momentum supplied by the motor's speed will
cause some of the functions to "miss" on some
machines. 

There are some adjustments on the Model 28 that are made
in this manner (such as aligning the type hammer to the
type pallets and setting the timing and strength of the
impact of the hammer on the type pallets).
