There is probably room in my garage for a Dovetron if they can
be had for a reasonable price.

Am I crazy to be bidding on this? I certainly wasn't planning to buy
it just to take up space and admire (my wife yells at me about every
new "boat anchor" :-). The thing has been sitting in a crate for 30
years, so I'd have to figure out how to wire it up and "commission" it
(lube, clean, etc.), but I found precious-little information on the
Web about MITE ttys. Anyone have leads on wiring diagrams, service
manuals, etc.? BTW, is this a 5 or 8-bit device?

I had one just like the one offered. It's cute, and is probably the
noisiest machine I've ever used. Louder than a '28 ASR with underdome
reperf running full out at 100 wpm. Certainly a conversation piece, and

if in good condition as this one appears to be, will print okay. It's
adjustment intense if it gets outa kilter. The type hammer strikes the
BACK of the paper against the ink... Dunno where you'd get parts if
needed. Convenient that it does come with a complete manual. And the
seller is correct, the plug (supplied, thank God) on the back that feeds

power and loop to it is impossible to find. I had to mold one myself.
 worked, but ugly..

I thought about bidding on it, but I don't need MORE, I need LESS...
;->

Good luck, and enjoy if you 'win'

The goverment surplus sales company, Government Liquidation, has a lot
of 18
Tempest Dovetrons up for auction. Check out their website at:
www.govliquidation.com. Event number 794, Lot number 520. It is a
sealed bid auction, opening 2/11 and closing 2/14. I would guess the
gear will
go pretty cheaply.
Their setup is similar to Ebay.

Maybe we could get 18 interested Greenkeyers together and bid on this.
I know I for one would go for this idea.

I also see three other lots of five each of the same model. I would very
much like to have one or even two Dovetrons.

Get an ad hoc group together and agree to a "per unit" max bid
and see what happens... better than bidding against one another.

The unit comes with its manual that has absolutely everything you
could want to know. ALL of the specifications, adjustments and wiring
diagrams. The nice thing about this auction is that it includes the
special wiring harness to hook it up.

I, too, would like to hold up my check book for one
of these units if someone with the right connections
and knowledge could pull off a "group buy".

Tim,
I bought a mite that had been in storage a number of years and had to =
totally disassemble the
function lever assy. to lube it. The oil had hardened so bad that I had
=
to heat some of the parts
before I could get them apart. Before the heat I tried 2 -3 brands of =
penetrating oil but nothing I
could think of worked. Their a neat little machine but take a valium =
before you adjust the print
hammer. Mine still isn't right. 8^)

managed to snag a M14ROTR for $20--hi--)
I would get in on a group buy IF someone knows how to pull it off
instead of setting off a shill war of price increases like That other

Subject: [GreenKeys] Dovetron Auction

GreenKeyers - - -

I have been looking at the Dovetron Auction, and it looks like an End
User's Certificate would be a major rub, in that they state it takes
about
three months to get an initial certificate, with certificates for
subsequent auctions taking about two weeks. I believe it also implies
that
each person receiving a unit would have to have some manner of EUC.

One GreenKeyer was recently visited by the feds because he had an H-P
105
Frequency Standard with a Gov't Stock Number that indicated it was
Missile
Systems Equipment. They spend considerable money having investigators
wander all over hell's half-acre checking out who has acquired equipment
not considered saleable to a foreign entity.

I have a friend who is in the Junque Business who knows all the ropes of
dealing with Federal Auctions. I will see if he would be willing to
render
any assistance in getting this lot.

A recent ebay auction featured a Dovetron sold by a regular ebay seller.
I
was outbid.

After the auction was concluded, the seller contacted me by e-mail
offering me a unit for the price I had bid on the auction item. I was
shocked and dismayed that ANYONE would dare to violate ebay rules. I
suspect that the seller's source of a multiplicity of Dovetrons was an
auction similar to the one Jack mentioned.

Another consideration is who would go and pick them up and ship them to
wherever? Proper packing and shipping takes time and money. Also, what
condition are they in??

Not trying to throw water on the campfire, but having been a principal
in
the logistics of the great Irv Hoff Mouse Machine Adventure (28KSRs, 160
of them) back in the late 60s, the factors mentioned above must be
looked
at.

I will talk to my friend tonight or tomorrow, and report what I find
out.

73,

George, W7KSJ
