Boehme was a 400 WPM Morse code system that the military used before and
for several circuits during WWII. It was replaced by the Baudot RTTY
systems. Here is a little info from my book. I would send a picture of =
it
in use at Scholfield Barracks, Hawaii but I don't think the list server =
will
allow it. I will send the picture in a separate message to see if it =
will
pass.

"An early method that was used in order to speed
transmission of messages was the Boehme system. The photo shows two
operators at a Boehme high-speed telegraph system. It was later =
replaced.
One operator is copying messages from a received tape while the other is
preparing a tape to transmit. It was a faster means of transmission than
manual keying. It used Morse code but the code was manually typed onto =
a
perforated tape and then transmitted at 400 words per minute. The
perforated tape could be used to relay messages. The message still had =
to be
manually enciphered and the tape perforated. At the receiver, it was =
again
manually typed from the tape and deciphered. Although the transmission =
time
was less, the time required to type, encipher, and transmit plus the
receiving, typing and deciphering was too slow and labor intensive for
military communications. This is the type of equipment that was used to
send the first report of the Pearl Harbor attack back to the War =
Department
in Washington D. C. From an overall speed of transmission viewpoint it =
was
not satisfactory." (From "Top Secret Communications of World War II " =

RTTY BA INFO NEEDED

I picked up the folloing 2 BA RTTY items over the
wekend and would like to get some documentation on
them...

Boehme Frequency Shift Converter Type 5-C. This is a
10.5 inch black rackmount unit with a 2 inch scope for
a tuning indicator. It has 16 tubes including a string
of 4 6Y6's. Very impressively built--looks like it
should be military but has no mil tag. The front panel
is 1/4" thick aluminum!

Type CRV-35049-A Tone Keyer, part of Model RDM radio
equipment, made by RCA. On the back it has a paper tag
that says "Model TK-43B Tone Keyer" and one of those
old RCA unit numbers: MI-17106-B. It is a 7" high gray
rackmount. Was this designed for repeater service?
It seems to have connections and controls for taking a
"Diode Load" signal from 3 receivers. This looks like
a top quality piece of gear.

Any help with either of these would be appreciated.
Thanks.
