[GreenKeys] How many columns does a Model 28 print?

Well, here is my two bits...
The margins on the model 28 are determined by the setting of the feed paw
release mech. on the front panel wire rope assembly. there is a release arm
on the right side that releases and holds the feed paws out while the spring
powered mech. pulls the "type box Assembley to the left...there is another
arm on the left side that sets the left margin and releases the feed paws to
engage the drive mech. or wheel. The dash pots only reason for being is to
keep the return to the left from slamming into place...it dampers the force
of the return. Does not in anyway set the margin's. if the dashpot is
sticking or otherwise has a problem...more than likely the rubber plunger is
bad or needs to be replaced. Also the inside of the Dashpot must be cleaned
out of all black sticky stuff...that was at one time was a rubber plunger.
So that the new and cleaned dash pot work freely. In some cases I found it
was easier and less time consuming just to order up a new dash pot...than to
spend all that time trying to get that gunk out of the old one. 68 printed
characters per line is correct...for model 28. In any event...read the
Teletype ..adjustments for the printer head....all you need to know is
there. In this case it is mandated one should read the directions before
fiddling around with the machine.
CFH is more than likely setup for a 80 chtr per line used in most dot matrix
printers. I do not think you will be able to get a full 80 chtr line on a
model 28.
Final word....do not oil the dash pot....do not allow oil to get into the
dash pot. If oil is in the dash pot....it has to be cleaned out, taken apart
and cleaned with solvent. A happy print head has a clean dashpot, also has
clean everything else and oiled pads. Well adjusted clutches and selector
mech.
John...
