Clarence,
Both units are receiving converters, converting received frequency shift
keyed signals into keyed DC for a TTY loop. Both use external DC loops
supplies and both will work at both 20 and 60 MA. Both were primarily used
by USN.
The CV-57/URR is an IF type, with an input frequency of 455 KHz plus/minus a
few. It will work standalone or drive one of two inputs of a CM-14/URR
Comparator for diversity operation. It is part of AN/URA-6 (the CM-14 is
part of AN/URA-6, 7 & 8).
The CV-89A/URA-8B (not 89) is essentially the same thing except that its
input is audio (so it will also handle AFSK) and it can drive a loop or one
input of a CM-22/URA-8A. It is an FM type and will copy shifts from about
170 Hz (but not too well - its intended shift was 850 Hz) up to about 1 KHz
(this from memory/experience - manuals are in the attic). It is part of
AN/URA-8B.
Note that the AN/URA-8 mentioned above shares no components with the
AN/URA-8A and -8B. Except for a few cables, tubes and maybe some knobs. -8A
should have been called something else.
