Dovetron was run by Hank Scharf, W6SKC, who passed away
last year. Hank was an old-time RTTY'er and I assume he
got into the "converter" market at first to cater to the
Hams. But, the design was so well done that Uncle Sam
got into the act. Hank must have had a good marketing
person!

When I bought my first Dovetron, sometime in the early
1990's, I contacted Hank to get some rackmount "ears".
He was very helpful and obviously proud of his product.
He gave me some hints about the infamous "burnt resistor"
problem on the Regen board and offered to help further.
The Dovetron I purchased (through the Yellow Sheets,
remember them?), had every option, including the CWID
board. I got it from a Ham in CA who had bought it new
from Hank. It was one of the first units to have the LED
"scope". I paid around $400 for it.

My uncle, WB2LRR, got his Ham ticket at the young age of
60 and became a RTTY/CW nut. He only bought the best and
I talked him into a Dovetron. I managed to obtain a 28ASR
for him and he used the Dovetron with a Drake C-Line.
He paid close to $800 for the Dovetron, brand new from
the factory; that was way back in the late 1970's, when the
Dovetron first came out (his also had the LED scope). At
that time, I could only drool over it when I visited his QTH.
I was still using my TT-L/2. Ma Bell wasn't paying me enough
for that kind of luxury (but at least I was being paid to
fix Teletypes!!).
