Here is my answer:
A ROTR (Receive Only Typing Reperforator) is dome mounted in the
upper left portion of the ASR behind the TD. The tape comes out of an
oblong hole in the cover above the TD. It is Receive Only... in
other words you cannot type on your keyboard and cause the ROTR to
punch. It is set up to take traffic from a different circuit, to be
re-transmitted on your TD. A ROTR has its own Electrical Service
Unit and its own Motor Unit.
A stand alone ROTR sits on a table and works the same way. Both of
these devices use a belt and cog drive in addition to two special
gears, or a gear shift mechanism.
A Typing Reperforator that is mounted so that the operator can cut
tape from the keyboard of the ASR is the more common application for
a Typing Reperforator.
