Hi folks:
Thanks to everyone who replied (on-list and many off-list). Several people
mentioned that 3 to 24 KHz was not quite right. Yeah, I'm not that much of
a novice, but looking at the tables from 3xxx to 24xxx, I did presume THAT
was KHz.
Well, I dug out an old arrl antenna book last night and did some reading.
There's more than meets the eye to this antenna business, but as most folks
pointed out, for receiving it is not as critical.
Anyway, my immediate concern is prepping a soon-to-be-sealed roof for
antennas -- I think I will plan on some eyehooks on the parapet walls for
suspending a horizontal wire or dipole, and a mounting plate for some sort
of vertical (with some eyehooks for guy wires). I also have a discone in
place (currently for an aircraft receiver), which is good for about 25-meg
and up.
After I get antenna mounting locations ready, I was thinking of just
putting some conduit to the locations, and adding coax and ground wires
later. I was also considering some sort of ground under the vertical --
discussions on radials seem to vary for number/length etc. What about
simply stapling some wire mesh to the ceiling joists before sheetrock goes
up? The "attic" is only about a foot high, so this "groundplane" would be
almost directly under the vertical. Or is it better to plan a proper
radial setup for something like 20m? I know this is probably overkill for
simple rx, but the place is just open wood framing now, so now is the time
to get it done properly.
thanks again for your feedback,
gil
