I'm a newbie, and hope to get on the air soon.  I'm a bit shy 
about this, thanks to a profound lack of knowledge about proper 
operating proceedure, so any hints or help would be greatly 
appreciated!  

Obviously, 'listening' to QSO's before getting on the air is
not a bad idea.

I'm assuming that I'll very likely be QSO'ing with folks who 
are operating computer-assisted rigs.  They going to be patient 
with the delays and slow typing inherent with operating a creaky 
old rig and a mechanical teleprinter?
