To all,
I have recently acquired a Test set, obviously both for setting up TTY
Equipment, but it also has the pulse generator necessary to satisfactory
set polar relays,
The info follows : FRONT COVER NOMENCLATUREl
J70164a
164C-4 Test Set
WESTERN ELECTRIC CO.
USA
It is obviously a TTY test set, as it has all the speeds necessary, the
crt to measure bias and disto, and the other suprising bells and
whistles, including provision for all speeds, and both 5 and 8 level code.
I have posted, on my website, pictures of this unit, so that someone who
is familiar with this can hopefully provide a little information.. My
main concern, at this point, is a twistlok power plug to mate with the
rather strange male recepticle on the front of the unit. If someone also
has a front cover for this, that clamps to the two locking clamps on
either side of the case, I would appreciate knowing about same and what
the person owning this rare animal would want in the way of green stamps
to transfer ownership--hi--
OK, the problem child connector.. this is a chassis mounted, male twist
lock connector, with an ID of 1.150" in diameter.
There are two twist lok connectors mounted at 45 degrees from top
vertical, and the other 180 degrees from the first, or
225 degrees from top vertical. Thw first contact is .317 in width,
which is the one mounted 45 degrees from top vertical, and the other is
.242 in width, and is, of course, 180 degrees from the first twist lock
connector, or 225 degrees from top vertical.
There is a center "prong?" which, until proven otherwise, I will surmise
is the grounding connector, which is a pin. .170 in diameter. Upon
removing the unit from the cabinet, I saw the the connector was
manufactured by hubble, and was rated
10A 250V.. The input jack is a pretty much standard WE tip/ring/sleeve
arrangement, with some various switches which can be seen in the lower
view. I have not, at this point, traced the switch functions on the jack.
Ok, what I need to know is A. Has anyone heard of this unit and are
familar with same/ B. Does anyone have a schematic of this unit for
sale, trade or whatever? C. Is anyone familiar with the matching
linecord mounted twistlok recepticle, and know of a source where one may
be obtained, or is this a standard line mounted twistlock which may be
obtained at any good electrical supply house. Judging from the "117
volts" engraved on the front panel, this looks like a 1950 vintage piece
of gear.
Since there are a plethora of adjustments inside, if someone would have
a maintenance manual for this unit, as well as the standard user manual,
I would be happy either to purchase same, or pay to have the original
copied and returned, at my expense.
The only markings on the unit, as there is no usual serial number/model
number/ mfg/contract plate on this, are a faded
warning stamp, reading "danger, chassis is at telegraph loop
potential:". and the handpainted number '6' on the left side of the cabinet.
This unit is about 8-9 for appearance, and I have not as yet fired it
up, as I would rather do so with the correct AC input
connector and not a couple of alligator clips. I also want to perform
an alignment and replace whatever needs replacing as far as internal
components. My boatanchor greenkeys are always restored to original
configuration.
I posted some pix of the unit on my website, and you are welcome to
peruse them as necessary. They are located at the
following URL:
http://www.moorefelines.com/greenkeys/WE%20164C-4%20Test%20set%20photos/
and from that point, you can open various views of the unit. These
photos were not taken by this Greenkeyer, and are not
in the best of quality focus wise on some of the views, but they are
good enough to see what I am talking about.;
Since I already one a Navy TDA, this is a very nice addition to my RTTY
rack, and as a totally different subject, if
someone on this list owns a fox box with 3 speed capability, the ability
to send revs and sg's, and possibly a disto meter,
which beats the heck out of reading a crt all the time, let me know. One
that would fit a 19" rack would be perfect, but any test unit capable of
sending the fox, revs, sg's, individual characters, possibility both
Baudot and ASCII format, as well as be able to act as a 22.5cps
generator for setting polar relays would be acceptable. It would also be
nice if said generator had both a neutral loop and polar output, at both
low and high level loops on the neutral output....let me know if you
have one floating around and we can talk green stamps at that point. ;-)
I plan , in the near future to be restoring quite a bit of greenkey
stuff, from printers, to multiple reperfs, to multiple td arrays, as
well as a couple of combo reperfs with tape takeup reels for making log
copies of the incoming and outgoing traffic. This is in relation to a
museum ship restoration project. Which may or may not happen, but that
won't stop me from collecting all the test equipment I can lay my hands
on ;-)
At any rate, that's what I am now working on, and I am tossing this wish
list out to the greenkey reflector for comments and possible
replies.....OPNOTE: anyone in the Upper Darby, PA area, who would be
willing to do the "grunt duty" to save this guy from additional spinal
surgery (and other cut and stitch repairs as well, which he has no
particular desire to repeat) (8 so far, (spinal surgeries, and staring
9 in the face, both shoulders, both knees, bilateral hernia, and
possibly facing a hip rebuild LOL., so you see that my lifting and
moving days are extremely limited) would also be appreciated --hi--;;I
simply cant lift any more like I used to......so any cheap labor
volunteers will be welcomed, if only for a good meal and the chance to
work on a variety of stuff from M14's thru M28's.......(I think I can
coax Isabel (XYL) or Ann (the YL/daughter) to produce the good meal, but
there is always Mickey D's or the local diner, which serves quite great
food...........LOL)....
