A couple of anecdotal items regarding Brecom.
A high-school buddy of mine, George Engeman, ex-WA6IMF, once told me how
he was copying signals from KNBR in San Francisco. He tripled the KNBR
carrier so that he could get a shift out of it that was easier to manage
than the ten-cycle shift that they were running (+/- 5 cycles). Apparently
KNBR was being keyed out of Hamilton Air Force Base, which was in Marin
County, at the North end of San Francisco Bay. There were runs of RYs, and
then a number of five-letter group messages would come down the pike.
Another anecdote was when I met Dick Dillman, W6AWO, of KPH/ Maritime
Historical Society fame, at a semi-secret enclave of Ne'er-do-wells up
here in the Northwest. We discussed all manner of things, and I asked him
if he knew anything about the secret system of running teletype over
broadcast stations.
He said he knew nothing directly, but did recall when he was at one time
visiting WABC in New York he observed the needle on the station frequency
monitor bobbing back and forth at a rather agitated rate. When his tour
guide, the WABC Chief Engineer, was asked about it Dick was told to forget
it. You didn't see anything, and you know nossing (to quote Sgt. Schultz).
I have long been curious about the Brecom subject. Thanks to all who have
contributed to this thread.
