Hi David:
When I did this 232 stuff a couple of years ago, I got 25 boards sets made
(the big one and the little tap). Sold 'em all off now. The big board
provides the loop supply, current-limiting resistance, and sense/key stuff,
so it directly connects a 232 port to a tty machine with no other hardware
needed. The tap only provides the sense/key portion, so it is for
insertion into a loop that has an external loop supply and current-limiting
resistance.
But I am planning on a second-generation of the board, and will let folks
know when it is available (probably a couple of months away at least). You
can always wire up a section of the design on a perf board.
I don't know what your TU-170 has for interfacing, as I know nothing about
that unit. Perhaps someone else can fill us in. What exactly are you
wishing to connect to what? Computer/Heavymetal to tty, and radio/TU to
tty? Did you plan to use one of your supplies to power the loop (and does
it have current-limiting)?

Gil-Thanks much! I looked at everything you had, and printed in all
out. (So I can show it to someone who has more skill, in order to help me.)
Meanwhile, reading what (I was able to understand) you helped answer many
of my questions.
Unfortunately, I already know that I lack the skill necessary to build
these things. (While I've always liked "playing with my teletypes," I've
always been limited to just copying RTTY.) [Not a ham.] I already have
an old Flesher TU-170 (that someone else built and sold me) plus another
"homemade" [again, someone else's] loop power supply as well as some
massive rack mounted thing [purchased off ebay several years ago] (which I
need to dig out of the storage area) that was purported to be a working
power supply for multiple teletypes units.
Therefore, I will try to find someone to build ONLY what is necessary for
my application, which I hope is the TTY232-TAP you described. The ONLY
other function I desire is for it to interface with is some X10 stuff so it
will automatically turn on/off a machine or two. I plan on using Bill
Buzbee's "HeavyMetal" for the controlling software.
Can you tell me if the TU-170 (Flesher) I have meets the criteria of being
"current-limited" such that it will be sufficient for this project?
I can always run tapes through the 28ASR, but my old 15, I would really
love to listen to it "clack" again, on a regular basis.
Again MANY thanks!
