Hi again, list...

Re the 33ASR problems...

In 33ASR school at Western Union we were taught, regardless of what "the
book" said, to NEVER bend a lever or make a bend "adjustment".. They break
too easily. They added that there were far too many other more conventional
things that could be done instead. We were further told that the technical
writers were told what to write by the machine's designers, and that none of
the Design Engineers nor the Technical writers ever saw the finished machine
after it was manufactured!! This in contrast to most manufacturers who
assigned their projects to "Project Engineers", people who followed the
project from design to implementation in the field.

I no longer have access to a Model 33 to look at to give advice instead of
to "bend metal".

As to the comment about the 33's dashpot: We were taught to carefully wipe
out (clean) both the plunger and "socket" that it went into, then to lightly
oil the "socket", and finally adjust it by means of the lever that allowed
more or less air to exit the "socket" on impact. I never had problem with
that. It wasn't supposed to be a "divider of men from boys"...!!!!!

As to the smooth and flattened platen, I've seen smooth ones, but never
flat ones. We were told to take a common file and roughen up the platen to
compensate. As I remember, and I haven't seen either a 33 nor a 28 in over
12 years, so I'm going from memory here, there is a small metal roller
behind the platen on a 33 which I think MAY be adjustable to compensate for
paper pressure. .IF I'm wrong, my apologies. I'm just trying to be helpful
here.

Best,
