should I simply remove the keys, and straighten the cover?

Greg,

I suggest you invoke the help of the Universal Assistance and Project
Acceleration Force;

Tu wit:

If you do your very best to repair the thing, taking lots of care and
diligence, then soon after you've gotten it looking and performing almost
like new. someone will offer you a brand new in the box part.

Example:

Some time ago I let it be known that I would like to find a particular full
legal power transmitter (for RTTY, of course) at a reasonable price. After
a while I got an offer of one and the deal has progressed very well
indeed. In the meantime, I got a chance to acquire a second one!

Not too long from now, some of you may hear K1LKY on the air with some
graphics tapes, (and not a single worry about overheating the final.)
