Almost all of the return E-mail addresses in SPAM are fake or forged, so
unless the SPAM is from an established company that uses a real address it
doesn't do any good to bounce it. I use Mailwasher too, but regarding the
percentage of SPAM I've had the opposite experience from yours - for a while
I devoutly bounced every one, but that only seemed to result in a drastic
increase in SPAM volume: now it runs anywhere from 70% to near 100% every
day. And I don't have a website or post messages on Usenet, so spammers
aren't getting my address that way.
Bouncing SPAM is a nice idea, but for now about all most of it accomplishes
is to uselessly clutter the E-mail network. The guy who wrote the Mailwasher
program says he's working on a new version that'll bounce to the originating
server owner instead of the (usually fake) return address, so maybe that'll
be an improvement, we'll see. At any rate, it's a pleasure to use the current
version to remotely delete junk from the ISP's mail server.
