[GreenKeys] spammer?

Hi folks:

I had a "fellow" inquire about the greenkeys list I admin, and I gave him
the usual info/intro for subscribing.  Then I saw a couple of posts with no
content, just thank-you fluff -- I was thinking that he was either an
eccentric old guy, or perhaps a spam robot, but I couldn't be sure.  One of
his messages had a statement that could not have been generated by a robot,
so I think it was a real person.  Today he was removed automatically for
excessive bounces.  Could this be a spammer trolling for email addresses by
subscribing to the list?  If so, is there any way to control this stuff?
