Almost right. It seems to have started out as a 28-line replacement for
the Model 20, which was the 6-level-code machine used to print
Teletypesetter information. Apparently there was no market for such
a machine - the old Model 20s were doing just fine and there wasn't any
expansion in that line of business. So the next thing that showed up
that was commonly called a Model 29 was the Model 28 IDP ASR set. This
worked in IBM BCD code, basically a 6-level code, and had two tape
readers, one for data and one for a program. These were supposedly
for internal Bell System use only, as the system did not want to market
a product using IBM code even though the business world would have liked
to be able to buy it. Some of them, in the form of RO printers, showed
up at a surplus dealer in Oakland, CA in connection with a scrapped RCA
computer. Some more of the printers were in the G.E. computer factory
circa 1966. These printers were rather easily convertible to Model 35
by changing a few parts.
So Model 29 basically means 6-level code, whether computer BCD or
newspaper upper/lower case.
