[GreenKeys] 33 Print Hammers

Towards the end of the '28 era in the FAA (Late 1980's!) we got some
'aftermarket' type hammers from I dunno where. They were of inferior
quality, and would either chip or mushroom the business end of the
hammer in a relatively short time. I suppose there may be some of these
still out there, so inspection is in order if you've replaced one
recently.

We maintained at least one '28 at the now closed Homestead AFB BASOPS.
One day a female Basops worker called to tell us that the "pecker" on
the typing unit was broken.. Hmmmm.... Hope this one makes it
through the filters..   ;->

>ice flat surface with which to hit the type pallets in the typebox.
>If that hammer has some metal missing it can hit the type pallets off center
>and cause mis-aligned typing and possibly damage to the type pallets in the
>typebox. If the hammer looks good, then it will probably last a long time.
>That's why Don and I have some many spares...they rarely break and, given
>the the fact that most of us Greenkeyers aren't running the machines at 100
>WPM, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, the machines will no doubt outlast us
>all. In the "old days" the 28's in commercial service took a real beating
>and those hammers did fracture. There was an upgrade that made the hammer
>and its related spring a one-piece assembly; previous to that, the hammer
>and spring were separate pieces.
>The palstic/rubber hammers in the 28 reperfs is another story.
>Unfortunately, they were also not made to last forever like the 33 type
>hammer. And, they are a ^%$#@! to replace.
