Don - looks like the speaker is NOT a field coil type. If I read the
schematic correctly, it has a filter choke rather than using a field coil
so any 4 ohm speaker ought to work.  Send me your address and I'll send
you the schematic.

Seems to me some of the recent issues of Popular Communications had
something on radio cabinets.  I suppose if it's really bad, you could take
stripper to it and do a total refinish. Believe a lot of those old sets
had a laquer finish rather than varnish.
