[GreenKeys] RE: FBI Teletypes

I use the NLETS system at work, it's really just a system of dumb terminals.
When I started working at the Sheriff's office I was excited when they told
me I would send a request by teletype. You can imagine my disappointment
when they led me to that CRT monitor! Then, they still use the term
"teletype" when referring to some specific documents (likely computer
generated now) that, at one time, was probably sent by teletype. Funny how
the term stuck with one report but not anything else they do. I cringe
whenever I hear "here's a teletype for you" and they hand me that piece of
paper! I don't care how it got here, if it's not on yellow ragged paper,
it's not teletype to me! They are not PC's (no hard drive, etc.) just a
monitor and specialized keyboard allowing you to send and receive info from
other locations (our incoming messages are routed directly to a printer)
using their equivalent of a Routing Indicator. Of course, things could be
different elsewhere, I have a pretty limited exposure to the system.
I would like to know more about the government use of the old machines for
EMP blast protection. Was that a television special or something that may be
repeated?
