Chuck,
Well I do have some tape.. but it is that box of time I need .. heheh
I recently got some jack strips. I need to hook up a loop supply and get a
T/D and reperforator in the same general vicinity of each other. Much of
my (working) TTY gear is in one room that I am about to overhaul so I can
set up the S-line and get on the air with it.
Hmmm... I just though: I wonder if I can use the phone patch built into my
S-line station console to get AFSK signals in and out of the transceive
setup. I think I'll ask the list if anyone has done that.

Yup.. its the tty graphics program. I think I have it downloaded, and have
a computer that will run it.. The thing I do not have ready is the
loop-to-RS-232 interface board. I do have the board but need the parts to
stuff it with. Gotta make an order to Digikey.

You need that little board that one fellow made up for us. Did you get
one? Gil Smith - Vaux Electronics.. info message attached. He also made a
smaller board that does just the loop current input/conversion, no loop
supply. that one is tiny and simple.

Hi folks:
Well David got the circuit board ball rolling this morning with his scope
power supply/deflection board. I'll continue that track with an update on
my TTY 232 interface board. Not quite as cool as David's board (no fancy
switching supplies), but handy anyway.
The quick summary:
PC board will cost $15.00 plus shipping to you.
Cost of a complete interface (parts plus pcb) is $93.97. Some cheaper
parts may be substituted (chassis, switches...), or you can build only a
portion of the circuit.
The interface provides:
1) High-Voltage (150V) loop supply, 60- or 20-mA loop operation, and four
insulated 1/4" jacks for one to four TTYs (M15, M28...). A switch
configures the four jacks in series for a local loop of keyboard-contacts
and/or selector magnets for various ttys (half-duplex use), or allows one
jack to be RX and the other three to be TX (full-duplex when using the 232
port).
2) Low-Voltage (30V) loop supply, 20-mA (only) loop operation, and three
insulated 3.5mm jacks for one to three TTYs (M32, M33...). The LV loop
only operates at 20-mils, and only in half-duplex.
3) RS-232 interface using fully opto-isolated connections to both HV and LV
loops. RS-232 transmit signal from the computer is sent to both loops (may
disable 232TX to either loop with a jumper). The computer receive signal
is jumper-selectable for monitoring either the HV or LV loop. HV loop may
operate full-duplex or half-duplex mode; LV loop is half-duplex only.
4) Socket for optional PIC microcontroller -- may be used to provide
ascii-to-baudot conversion, baud-rate conversion, auto-line-feed insertion,
detection of command sequences, digital or analog i/o, control of an X10
powerline interface (TW523 or PL513) for load control. Stuff like that.
There are many 28-pin PICs that fit this socket (cheap to pricey). There
is also an optional serial eeprom socket (I2C) to use with PICs lacking
internal eeprom. If PIC is not installed (which will be the case, since it
is not programmed yet), jumpers connect the 232 port directly to the tty
loop interface -- Bill's RRTYArt program can then talk directly to any of
the machines.
5) RS-485 network interface may be used in place of 232 interface. This
gives 4000 foot distance over a twisted-pair line, for a master-slave
half-duplex net. Without the PIC to control traffic, the 485 line may be
used for TX-only use, providing long-line capability.
I have already heard from quite a few folks who are interested in the
interface. If you still want it (at $15 plus ship), give me a final yes
and I'll get them ordered. I'd like to ftp the files in the next day or so
-- the board shop is in Canada, and turns the board around in four days
(standard).
The board is 4.3 x 4.8 inches, double-sided. It will not have a solder
mask or silkscreen. The board shop, EP Circuits
(http://epcircuits.uniserve.com/) charges $40 to tool a double-sided board,
and $0.50 per square inch to produce it. Shipping is FedEx International,
which will likely run about $40. I am looking at a run of about 25 boards,
so there will likely be an extra charge for a non-prototype-sized run.
Anyway, it works out to be close to $15 each for 25 boards. I've used
these guys in the past many times, and been happy with the
quality/price/turnaround.
If there was a higher quantity, we could use a production house and likely
lower the price a bit (and turnaround would be more like four weeks), but
at about 25 units, EP Circuits is the best choice that I have found (David:
let me know if you know otherwise).
The parts list is below. I'll get the final schematic and assembly drawing
posted shortly.
later,
gil
