Jim,

Welcome to the world of TTY! Just so that you don't
get too tangled up in the "lube orders", a basic rule is
to lightly oil all moving surfaces at pivot points and so on.
The 15 has several felt friction washers which have to be
saturated. They're all on the mainshaft that runs through the machine
(right to left). If you sit the machine on its side you can get at all of
the bearings and the felts on the mainshaft. Some light grease on
touching surfaces won't hurt, either. The front vanes that operate
the type basket levers are a good candidate as well as the tracks that the
typebaskets rides on. Make sure you put oil at the pivot points for
the typebars...they get a lot of exercise and need to be lubed well.
I use standard 10W motor oil and grease from Home Depot. Just
don't over-oil or you'll have a real mess on your hands (and everything
else).
When I worked for Ma Bell most of the TTY repairmen just opened
the lid of the 15 and squirted oil onto anything that moved. In those
days the poor old 15's were on their last legs anyway. These guys just
helped them to die slower. These were the same jokers who wouldn't
work on a 28 because it was "too fast"!
