Hello list...
This is in reply to how to ship teletypes..
I used to do this many times a day when I served extra duties as
"storekeeper"
at Western Union.
Model 28's and 35's.. with the pedestal.. done on a pallet. Use steel
strapping tape and run the tape over the top of the machine on each side
(end?) and around the top layer of the pallet. This holds the machine to
the pallet. Then there is a wood and wire "fence" appearing assembly that
goes around the machine and over the top which protected the machine if
someone stacks another pallet it top of it. These protections store flat.
Model 32's and 33's... with pallet..
First, if you take the cover off the machine and look at the bottom interior
framework of the typing unit, you will see a curricular ring in the middle.
Now look up underneath of the metal bottom of the typing unit and you will
see a hole in the middle of the bottom. Put a bolt, perhaps 5/8th diameter
down through that ring and hole from the inside with a flat washer top and
bottom, and a lock washer on under the bottom, and tighten this bolt system
up . This holds the typing unit safely in place.
For many technicians these holes don't show up and therefor they don't know
about them.
Then steel strap the assemblies to a pallet as described above.
32's and 33's without a pedestal.. Never did it.. suggest a well packed in
a heavy duty, sturdy carton..
Shipping... Normally done by truck as the cheapest way, unless one is in a
hurry and has the money and then by air freight.
A plastic stick on envelope with the shipping papers (AKA "packing list")and
another stick on label with the addressee and return address, put on the top
of the packed assembly when on the pallet.
This was how a prepared company did it.. As to hams doing it, this is
another matter!! I have no idea of cost as W.U. had contracts with
shippers and I never saw the billing..
Good luck!!
