If memory hasn't completely left me, I think the military had some TDs with
odd
segments that were used with an early form of cryptography.

There were some weird 6 and 7 bit coded systems that were used for "special
systems" like stock systems, etc.. Not everything was 5 or 8 bit coded
Baudot or ASCII systems!
When I was serving as a Western Union "Wire Chief", (a tech) we had
programmable test modems that could be switched as 5, 6, 7, and 8 bit codes!
