In 1941, IBM Corporation introduced a machine that was =
designed using the IBM electric typewriter technology and punched tapes =
so that signals could be relayed. It was called Radiotype. It operated =
at 100 words per minute. The army installed these machines on a number =
of circuits and used it for several years. The problems were that they =
would not work with enciphering machines and they were incompatible with =
the International Standard Baudot code. They used six-bit code =
characters instead of the five bits of the Baudot code. =20
