As of the evening of August 7, the NG9R-1 DX Spider node will be taken down.
Those of you that have been using it, please switch to NG9R (CC Cluster
node) at ng9r.homeip.net port 23. NG9R is available via RF on 144.910 same
as NG9R-1 was. So far only a couple of users have made the switch to NG9R.
If you don't switch by August 7, you will get an error if you try to connect
to NG9R-1.
If you have not used NG9R-1 or NG9R, please give NG9R a try, it is there for
Great River DX members to use. For telnet connections set your software to
ng9r.homeip.net port 23 (the old DX Spider node was NG9R-1 and used port
7300). It is currently connected with VE7CC, W9ZRX and W0MW and I will add a
couple of other nodes as time goes on. This means NG9R sees all the same
spots and announcements as any other node or internet site and the advantage
over using most internet sites is you can set personal filters so you only
see spots you are interested. The advantage of using NG9R over other cluster
nodes id we can all see each other when we are logged in and easily talk or
chat with each other, a bit of a pain if we all connect to different nodes.
There is very little difference to the user between the DX Spider node and
the CC Cluster node, the biggest differences are on the sysop end. You will
not get disconnected when the node software gets updated and the DXCC
countries list, US call database and Maidenhead grid database is
automatically updated every week.
When you log into NG9R the first time, you will need to set the normal node
configuration settings and any filters you want set. If you have any
problems, contact me and I will help you get it set up.
Also, this of you that use your logging software to initiate your
connection, please consider setting your software to notify you when someone
sends you a talk message. I think almost all logging software that has an
automatic connect option will also have a bell or such that will sound when
you receive a message. You can even run the VE7CC User software (highly
recommended) and connect your logging software to it if you like, it may
make setting filters and other commands to the cluster much easier.
Please load up on connections on NG9R, I have yet to see much of a user load
to try it out yet. I know at least a couple of you have had 2 or more
connections going at once, that is entirely acceptable, I do it here all the
time, that way I can monitor spots and propagation from any computer in the
house or even from my phone when away from home. You can also connect to 2
or more nodes at a time if you desire.
I'll send out one more email announcing the last day NG9R-1 will be
available again just a day or two before I shut it down.
