This is my first message to the list, so please be patient :) I'm trying to make a clone of the VE2ZAZ GPSDO using an ATXMEGA128A3U processor. To simplify the work I would like to use the Montrol v4 app on my win7 box. At the moment there seems to be a problem with Montrol reading incoming characters from COM1 (the hardware COM-port on my PC). Everything seems ok when I start Montrol, no error messages. I then send the string "L|.|0806|.|.|6800|0013|FFFE|0030|00\r\n" to COM1 from another PC, but nothing appears in the Montrol monitor window. - Reception of the teststring on COM1 has been verified by PuTTY 4800N1 - When Montrol is running, COM1 can not be opened from PuTTY, so Montrol seems to open COM1 I also tried running Montrol as administrator with compatibility settings for Win95, Win98, Win2000, Win XP (SP2 and SP3), but no luck. - Is Montrol waiting for a 'magic' string to start the logging of incoming status strings from the COM port? - Does the fact that Montrol was made for an older Windows affect it's ability to handle COM-ports under Win7? Any ideas? 73 de LA6FI, Arve From w0ep at w0ep.us Tue May 9 17:52:38 2017 From: w0ep at w0ep.us (Chris Howard w0ep) Date: Tue, 9 May 2017 16:52:38 -0500 Subject: [GPS_Standard] Running GPS_Std Montrol on Win7 In-Reply-To: <3f883fab-53b5-2354-45dc-adb0d80bfd23@gmail.com> References: <3f883fab-53b5-2354-45dc-adb0d80bfd23@gmail.com> Message-ID: (re-sending to the whole group) I have successfully run a perl script on a Linux PC to talk to my VE2ZAZ GPSDO. I don't remember any magic characters coming from the device. It has been a long time since I looked at it. I think I remember the serial port settings are slightly strange. And a computer-to-computer serial port setup may need a cross-over cable or null-modem or something like that. The email I sent was coded in HTML, which the mail server rejects. Must be plain text only. Here is my original reply: ---------------------------- Greetings Arve, There is nothing special expected from Montrol. At launch, it issues a parameter list command ( P\r\n ) to update the parameter fields and expects the return string to come in. It then just reads the status strings as they come in and displays them. If your monitor window stays blank, you definitely have a communication problem to resolve. I think I know your problem. The string you are sending is missing one character. Montrol expects a \n at position 38. Yours is sent at position 37. L|.|0806|.|.|6800|0013|FFFE|0030|00\r\n Your string L|.|01D00|.|.|67FA|0027|0001|4936|00\r\n My string The DAC value should be a 5 character one, not 4! Montrol is used on Windows 7 by many users, and nobody has complained of incompatibility. As a matter of fact. Montrol works everywhere from Win95 to Win10!
