You can debate the "brand-A processor is better than the others" 'til
the cows come home. Just like the Chevy, Ford, Chryco pissing contest,
there are hardcore users who will defend their camp to the death. IMHO
they're all the same, some manufacturers use Von Neuman, others use
Harvard architecture, all offer families with a variety of speed and
peripherals.
I've found that in general most people tend to stick with (i.e. design
at work) the brand and family of processor that they cut their teeth on
in college. That said, I learned on Intel MCS-85, use Freescale
(Motorola) at work and often use PIC and Atmel for my hobby projects.
There are situations in the past that steered the popularity of certain
makes of uC (i.e. Motorola blew it with the hobbiest when they allocated
all of their parts for months and even years at a time to the
automakers) but generally, use whatever tool will suit your needs.
