Not at all. In fact, there was an article in QEX within the last few
years of such a circuit. It used a regular transistor in a TO-220 case as
the heating element.
The thing is that you want a tuning range of a few Hz at most around 10
MHz for your tuning voltage range.
I don't think the commercial units have completely dried up. What you
want to search for on eBay is "ocxo", not "tcxo". Also try "10811"
and "10544".
I'll ask Pyrojoseph if he thinks he's going to come up with more of the
Isotemp units. He's a ham, by the way, and is on the microwave reflector.
