Hi Doug,
Thank you for bringing this up to the mailing list members. It is always
appreciated when someone takes the time to share his/her findings.
After looking at the specsheet link you provided, I see a few reasons why it
is unlikely that this Bliley TCVCXO would work well. For sure it would not
meet the performance I have seen so far.
The most important point is the tuning range. +/-5 ppm @ 10MHz is 100 Hz of
total tuning range, or 10 times more than the maximum I have tried the
circuit with. It is also 100 times more than the HP oscillators. The
slightest disturbance in 5V DC supply load would induce a significant drift
in frequency. Of course, in the end it all depends on the level of accuracy
and stability you are looking for...
This kind of oscillator is targeted for the telecom industry where high
bandwidth PLL's constrantly adjust the oscillator to be in sync with an
incoming signal. What matters as well in those applications is that, within
a 20 year period, the oscillator does not drift by more than 4.6ppm (stratum
3 quality) from nominal frequency. Long term drift is not really a concern
in our application, as far as the oscillator stays within its tuning range
of the nominal frequency.
The application we have calls for an ovenized oscillator with a tuning range
of 1Hz (10Hz max) end to end, exactly what the HP units provide. Going by
experience, I would expect this Bliley unit to be priced in the $30-$50
range. Just put a bit more and get a *real* performer. :-)
Regards,
Bert, VE2ZAZ

Bert,
Might this be a suitable candidate for use in the project?
