Thanks to everyone who replied regarding my recent message about the
corroded-open "RF Gain" control on the rear apron of the CD 6 Meter
Communicator 2 I rescued from a hamfest a few days ago. What I finally
wound up doing, as suggested, was just wiring that stage to run at near
maximum gain by tacking a 100 ohm resistor to ground in place of the
control. I noticed that the original design runs this special pot in the
cathode of the 6BH6 IF amplifier, thus it's really an "IF Gain" control, and
the pot sweeps from 150 Ohms to 1K Ohms without ever actually shorting out
at the ground end of travel. Thus the cathode is always at least 150 Ohms
above ground, and why I decided I would use the 100 Ohm resistor (didn't
have a 150.) Works great and it can hear a 0.4 microvolt signal.
Now all I have to do is find someone nearby on 6 Meter AM to talk to!
