[Gonset] RF Gain Rheostat Comm II

I rescued a yellow CD-marked 6 Meter Communicator II at a hamfest last
weekend and in the process of restoration discovered the cheap
riveted-in-place sheet metal rheostat on the receiver's rear apron was
rusted and open circuit. This is the RF gain adjustment and is a 1.5W 1K
screwdriver-adjust style.

Has anybody located a source for these or a work-around? My Radio's Master
from the era says this is a Wirt WC815 pattern rheostat with a grounded
rotor. I am thinking about either just bypassing it entirely or
clip-leading an external rheostat into the circuit, finding the correct
resistance, and then using a fixed 2W resistor of that value. The manual
offers no explanation of how to set it, just what it is. I thought I might
pose the question to the group in case someone else has found a better
solution. Other than stealing some paint from the taxi company, that's the
only issue left with this radio!
