Roy:
Thanks, Your right on that point, they CAN be DEADLY !!!
I thought I would expand a bit on your warning for some of the
newcomers to "Old Rig Restoration" who may be unaware of some of
the possible dangers involved.
This double fusing concept goes way back, I've seen old houses
wired with both sides of the line fused with NO ground !!!
When the "Low Side"fuse blows everything has the potential of
sitting with the case floating on the "High Side"of the line !!!
All that is needed is to touch the case of the device and a ground
like a water faucet at the same and ZAPPO you complete the circuit !!!
In my case, I have a test bench with a VARIC feeding an Isolation
Transformer and a ground strip connected to a ground rod AND the panel
ground. I use a separate ground lead from the chassis of the rig I'm
working on to my ground strip.
This is a MUST when working on any of the old AC/DC power rigs.
One other thing I incorporated in my test bench is a plug strip with
separately fused receptacles for 1/2A, 1A, 2A, 3A, 5A, and 10A.
When I get a "New" old rig, I plug it into a low current fused receptacle
and bring the voltage up slowly to form up the electrolytics and check for
any major faults. After it's working I plug the rig into the receptacle fused
for what the rig call for and let it cook with out fear of going up in smoke.
I've found rigs that called for 2A fuses with 20A fuses in them and smoked
power transformers. I blame that on ignorance, frustration,or to many 807's !!!
A lot of good rigs have been ruined that way by the "Hammer Mechanics" !!!
Rule 1: Check the fuses in the rig FIRST before putting power to it.
Happy Holidays to all
