[GE] Programming the Phoenix-SX radio?

Hi All,

I have been given a fair number of GE Phoenix-SX 16 channel radios (VHF
version), speakers, mics cables etc, along with a "Niles Radio" eeprom
programmer and Diskette containing a DOS programming program for my
computer. I also have the GE "training Course" manual for the radio, a
manual for the older programmer (little black box with some cables,
containing three BCD switches and a couple pushbuttons).

The deal I made was that I'd check the radios out, program them for the
local repeaters, simplex, weather etc then sell them to some local hams at a
reasonable price and give the man a few bucks of it per radio (he sort of
left it up to me). He's a comm service tech for PGE but hasn't had the time
to do anything with them.

I've checked out a number of the radios and found about 7 good ones out of
nine tested (they RX and TX OK). Only problem is, when I pulled the eeprom
out of one to "practice" programming it, I couldn't seem to accomplish
anything from the computer. Yes, I was able to save a frequency table in
the computer, but couldn't figure out how to write to the PROM (the writer
connects to Serial port 1 of the computer, 2400bd 8N1).

The man I got the stuff from isn't from the immediate local area so I can't
have him sit down and give me step by step directions.

I'm a retired electronic tech and have a GOOD background in communications
and radio going back to the early '50s, but NOT in commercial radios and the
programming there-of.

ANY help or suggestions from members of this list would be greatly
appreciated. Perhaps a web site somewhere with a "tutorial? Thank you.
