There should be enough slack in the front end to get an MPX down to 146 MHz
but probably not below that...I haven't tried to do it so I couldn't say.
The MPX seems to be an MPR with the modules soldered in and a black case,
otherwise they look about the same to me.  I'm sure there's more to it than
that.

The real issue is the cost of crystals for the channel elements...you can
buy a synthesized radio for less than the cost of a few crystals these
days...
