Thanks Jon WB2MNF. I found a good YouTube video on flashing the Heltec V3 nodes (I wish I had found this a few weeks ago 😊):
Meshtastic For Dummies AND Heltec V3 Setup for $10 <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igWP0O_VuUo>
The video fails to mention that, in some cases, you may first have to install a driver (from the Meshtastic website) in order for your computer to recognize the ESP32-based LoRa board prior to using the USB cable to flash the Meshtastic software to the LoRa board. (But in some cases a suitable driver may be installed already on your computer).

P.S. if you purchased the recommended package from Amazon, you will find that the supplied case makes for a VERY tight fit. Jon pointed out to me that it helps if you DO NOT use the double sided adhesive tape to hold the battery inside the case. The tape is NOT needed for assembly and leaving it out makes it easier to close the case. The tape may be good later on for mounting the finished node to, for example, a window pane.

Subject: [GCARC] Tech Saturday preparation
This Saturday we'll be covering the 915 MHz Meshtastic radios and their use in a large network. If you've purchased the Heltec units that I've described or many of the other LoRa radios they need to be programmed with the Meshtastic firmware before use. This is pretty simple following the instructions on the flasher.meshtastic.org web page, plugging the unit into your Windows computer (I don't know about other types of computers) with a USB-C DATA cable and following the steps on that web page. If you don't want to do that I'll be at the clubhouse on Saturday by around 8:30 and can get as many flashed as possible before the session starts. We'll also be focused on the phone-based software that uses a Bluetooth connection so you may want to download and install the Meshtastic app for your iOS or Android device in advance of the session.
