Join the GCARC for a fun and practical project at the GCARC Tech Saturday event on May 10, 2025! We’ll be building the "Wideband Dummy Load with a High-Accuracy Wattmeter," featured in the February 2025 issue of QST. This handy device measures power output across the HF and VHF/UHF spectrum and is a great addition to any ham radio setup. Chris Prioli AD2CS will be leading this effort as usual for these types of construction projects, bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to guide us through the build.
The project uses a flange-mounted, high-frequency/high-power resistor and a diode detector as the load, paired with an Arduino microcontroller to measure current and display it on an LCD screen. It’s a nice mix of basic electronics and a bit of microcontroller work—perfect for both experienced builders and those looking to try something new.
We’ll kick off at 9 AM on Saturday, May 10 at the clubhouse and aim to complete the kits by the afternoon, likely in just one day. Space is limited to 10-12 participants, and with plenty of interest expected we may schedule a second session the following Saturday if needed.
We’re announcing this early—well ahead of the May 10 date—so we have ample time to order the components and printed circuit boards. The kit will cost around $50, depending on prices when we place the order. If you’d like to join, email Chris Prioli AD2CS at cpprioli at gmail.com<mailto:cpprioli at gmail.com> to reserve your spot. We’d love to see you there!
