Operation from the guest house of VP9GE in Hamilton, Bermuda
I used the well-known club call of VP9I again.
Antennas:
Dipoles for 160, 80, 40.
A4S Tribander for 10,15,20
VP9 is a LP destination (no amplifiers allowed).
Great to operate once again from the shack of Ed VP9GE, a most gracious host.
Things appeared to be off to a great start when I arrived Thursday before the
contest. All antennas checked out. I brought a new T2X rotor for Ed to replace
the one that failed. He got it ready for install and in testing discovered a
problem either in the cable or the control box. Things were still not sorted uot
by the beginning of the contest, and in his setup, the tribander has to be
lowered to replace the rotor.
We left it up fixed north until Sat afternoon while he was trying to fix
things. Fortunately 40m was exceptional Fri night, and by morning over 500
double point QSOs were in the log. However, with the yagi due north, and condx
not great Sat morning, LP was not cutting it for US or EU, and the rate
plummeted. After the yagi came down, I found the 40m dipole liked my K3 ATU
enough to give a great match on both 15 & 20. So if you worked me on a high
band, it was likely the dipole. Looks like most people stayed on 40m, ignored
80m mostly (although also double points), nothing at all on 160.
The yagi was up late Sun afternoon and fixed on EU, but by that time activity
slowed.
Well, with things being upgraded and replaced, next trip should be even better.
In spite of the problems, I improved the score 25% over last year's, 25%
increase in multipliers, and almost the same count for QSOs (the double point
40m increase in QSOs and extra mults did the trick).
Thanks for all the FRC'ers who are in the log!
